When I started my current, très corporate job the experience of commuting uptown, dressed in a pencil skirt and button down felt so not me. For months I sat in my office feeling completely out of place. While it may sound silly, I soon discovered that when I dressed more like myself, the whole 5th-Avenue, skyscraper experience changed. I was suddenly more in control and able to relax. My uniform now includes skirts with sweet details, ankle boots and the occasional neon accent.

Have you ever experienced this feeling? How do you ensure that you stay true to yourself at work?

Life has been so intense lately that a girls’ brunch was exactly what I needed this Saturday. On a weekday Maialino is the place to have a power breakfast, but on the weekend, it’s sweet and relaxed with amazing pain au chocolates. I have a lot more sleep to catch up on, laundry to fold, and phone calls to return, but sometimes spending time with friends is just simply more important.

Last week I held a little giveaway. I asked every one to say what they were going to do for Valentine’s Day. The comments were so sweet, like little presents. They inspired me to get a little creative (despite having about ten minutes to put it together) and have a little celebration complete with glitter, hearts, and cupcakes.

One of the reasons why I love what I do so much is that I get to have some amazing behind-the-scenes moments. Watching Tom Pecheux, Estée Lauder‘s Creative Makeup Director, create this sexy, “undone secretary” look at Derek Lam was one of those times. The models, beauty, and clothes were all perfection.

For me, Valentine’s Day is about love for others, but also ourselves (i.e., eating something sugary without the typical post consumption self loathing). When Jacques Levine asked me if I wanted to do a giveaway for their luxe slippers, I couldn’t think of a better way to be sweet to my readers and also for them to be sweet to themselves.

Despite the cold and an incredibly intense week at work, staying in was not an option being that this was the first weekend my best friend was back from a month abroad. To get out the door I decided to dress up the jeans and t-shirt I already had on with a sparkly pair of earrings, bright heels, and an extra, extra warm jacket.  We caught up over peach cocktails, mushroom toast, and steak sandwiches at Pastis, strolled home afterwards on Bleecker Street, and then I met Andy Samberg (but that’s another story for another time).

Often the photos taken by mistake, out of focus, or without purpose end up being my favorite. This is a little moment and preview of tomorrow’s post…

One of my favorite birthday presents this year was from my friend Fatima. While walking through Nolita this summer we stumbled into Love, Adorned and I feel in love with this bowl. Fatima surprised me with it months a later. Isn’t it the epitome of simple glamour?

Having dyed my hair and then dyed it back. Over blow-drying, curling, and ironing it on a daily basis. Forgetting to cut it for way too long. All these have led to my hair being, let’s just say, not at it’s best. Then, I was invited to try Aveda’s new Damage Remedy kit. It was love at first condition.
