COddington’s COlors

Yesterday my friend sat next to Grace Coddington on the subway. Yes, the Grace Coddington, Creative Director of Vogue magazine. She has flaming red unruly hair, wears orthopedic shoes and is so un-Vogue that you can’t help but adore her. Personally I love her for a certain moment in The September Issue. As she sat in her town car being shuttled around during Paris Couture, she gazed out the window and explained to the camera crew that you have to look out the window, you have to constantly observe, because you never know what will inspire you.

On my way to work today I thought of Grace driving through France. I however, was not in Europe, I was walking through Harlem on my way to one of the Harlem Village Academies charter schools where I am helping with their annual benefit. What inspired me on my walk? The colors. The torn Puerto Rican flags billowing in the spring breeze. The spray painted Virgin Mary mural on the corner wall. Gold For Sale. Browned roasted chickens, the smell wafting out of the corner stores. Coffee being served out of faded red coolers on the sidewalk. Flashing lights. Pink cherry blossom petals falling on the sidewalk.

What’s inspiring you today?
